Winsor McCay Day


Celebrate Winsor McCay Day at Spring Lake District Library on Tuesday, June 13.  The library will host these special events in honor of Winsor McCay’s contributions to the field of animation.

                10:00 am  Children ages 5-12 are invited to explore the McCay’s legacy during a fun-filled presentation by children’s book author Aaron Zenz.  Children will receive a free McCay-inspired balloon to take home.

                2:00 pm   Artist, author, and cartoonist Kevin Collier will include an introduction to McCay’s art during a traditional cartooning class.  This program is designed for children in third grade and up.

                6:30 pm  Chef Jamie Paquin serves samples of a McCay inspired recipe, welsh rarebit, which is a savory cheese sauce served over a hearty Anadama bread. Recipes will be provided .

                7:00 pm  Artist and author Kevin Collier presents “Secrets Behind Winsor McCay’s 1880 Illustration of the Sinking of the Alpena.” Collier will present a poster-size version of McCay’s drawing of the Alpena and tell the tale behind McCay’s first commercial illustration which he created at age 13. Collier will have copies of his recently released book “Winsor McCay: Boyhood Dreams” available for purchase and signing.
